  What Causes Diabetes?

  Diabetes is the result of the body's inability to balance and utilize glucose (blood sugar) properly. The hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas, enables the body's cells and muscles to use sugars and starches from food for energy. An excess of glucose can cause:

    Insulin Resistance - your body becomes resistant to insulin

    Type 1 Diabetes - your body fails to produce insulin altogether

    Type 2 Diabetes - your body has trouble producing insulin and needs dietary changes to help cells utilize insulin more effectively

  Among those at the greatest risk for developing diabetes are those who:

    Have a family history of the disease

    Are over 45 years of age

    Have a weight problem

    Suffer from hypertension

    Are inactive, lacking an exercise routine

  Symptoms of Diabetes are:

    Frequent urination

    Feeling tired/lack of energy

    Excessive thirst

    Irritability

    Numbness, tingling, burning in hands or feet;

    Intuition — If you feel you should have your blood sugar checked for any reason, do so!
